An ambitious competitive athlete, a family business on the brink of ruin and a handsome Instagram star – these are the promising ingredients of this young adult rom-com.

Her grandfather’s (Thomas Balou Martin) swimming pool is home to 18-year-old competitive swimmer Trixie (Serena Oexle). But when the pool is on the brink of ruin, it is let to a group of wannabe mermaids, whom Trixie is now forced to put up with in her waters. Part of the group is 16-year-old Instagram star and crowd-puller Finn (Philip Günsch), who even makes Trixie’s heart of steel beat a little faster. Will the athlete and the merman be able to admit that they’re on the same wavelength? 

The mermaiding rom-com series is the fourth winning project to emerge from RTL+’s “Storytellers” programme for emerging talent. The project and series concept were created by writers Lia Zebra and Larissa Dold, both graduates of the HFF Munich. Olga Alexandra Müller is directing. At the same time, “Mermaids to Lovers” is the first project to benefit from the talent development partnership with the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. As a result, the production budget has more than doubled.
